On or about January 8th, 2021, the Lee County Sheriff’s Department was notified about an incident in Lee County, in the Belden community, where a Vito Richard Balice was accused of reportedly taking several checks from an individual and cashed those checks for approx $9,000.00 without his permission or authority.
During the investigation it was determined that Balice took advantage of an elderly citizen and scammed him into giving Balice the checks. Balice used the pretense that he was doing paving work on a driveway of the victim, however it was determined that there was no work done to the driveway as demanded and insisted by Balice.
Also during the investigation, it was learned that Vito Richard Balice was charged in Ohio and Illinois for similar types of crimes, along with numerous other felonies including theft, burglary, and theft by deception.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigation Division determined that the statute for Exploitation of a Vulnerable Adult under Mississippi code of 1972 as amended was warranted and an affidavit and warrant was issued by the Lee County Justice Court for that charge.
On January 25th, 2021, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department was able to locate and take Vito Richard Balice into custody without incident and transport him to the Monroe County Adult Detention Center. They had warrants from Lowndes and Lee County for Balice and he will be transported to those agencies for service of the active warrants and initial appearances before the appropriate courts.
The case against Vito Richard Balice will be presented to the district 1, District Attorney’s Office, to be presented at the next Lee County Grand Jury.
