Felony Child Depravation

Posted on: January 5th, 2016

On January, 1, 2016, the Lee County Sheriff’s Department received a complaint from the Department of Human Services about a 3 year old child that had some severe injuries and had been taken to LeBonheur hospital in Memphis, TN. The child had numerous unexplained injuries all over the body and bleeding on the brain.  On 12-3115 the child was taken by it’s caregiver (non-relative) to NMMC due to injuiries that she believed the child sustained while visiting with the biological mother and stepfather. The caregiver stated that the child went to stay with the mother and that she had called numerous times to get the child back and they would not return the child. The statements were very inconsistent by both suspects as to what happened to the child. The stepfather said at one point that the child had quit breathing and he had to do CPR to revive the child. Upon completeion of the interviews, conflicting stories and medical evidence of injuries, charges were levied against both suspects for Felony Child Deprivation for failure to get maedical attention for the child. The child is recovering and has just been released from the hospital and in is DHS custody at this time. All charges will be presented to the next Lee Co Grand Jury.
